Media Industry Life
The news represents one of the most important parts in the life of any human being. It does not matter if the news is highly local; like knowing what open market the best prices can be found; or if they are highly global, for example; related to geopolitical events that shape the modern world. For everyone, the ability to know the news. Especially those which are important to their specific issues can make a huge difference in their lives.
I was fortunate to learn the same from my family while I was a small boy; growing up in an industrial town. There, my family ran the local newspaper for more than three generation and since my young age; I was embedded practically by birth in the media. Even back then, I found it all fascinating; The way individual journalists ran to find the stories they were after. Placing them in the right directories. Then finally printing the evening editions, that would later be distributed across the town.
I was so enchanted by the same media industry business
I quickly learned that this was the thing I wanted to pursue in my adult life. In high school, I ran the school newspaper for two years and became well-known because of that. In the same newspaper, I met my future wife and fell in love. But I also fell in love with the business and the media industry as a whole. There was no doubt about the choice of my college and took off to get my journalism degree; which I did in the record amount of time.
However, just as I was about to enter my professional journalism career; where I would examine and inform about the most important issues in my hometown, tragedy struck. The same place, which was once a leading industrial town in the region; became decimated by the loss of work that came with factories closing and moving their business abroad. Where they could get cheaper labor prices. Then, the same process entered a completely new speed; and in a space of several months. There was almost nothing left.
Almost half of the town lost its job and became permanently unemployed
My family took this hard and equally quickly, the newspaper lost circulation. The loss of revenue meant that they had to fire many of their staff and after they left, my mother and father realized they cannot support the newspaper any longer. The unthinkable happened; the newspaper closed down before I could start working there as the fourth generation. I was shocked, just like everyone in the family. But, out of desperation, came ingenuity.
This all happened in the late 1980’s and even back then; I realized that a lot of the media resides on the things that are not particularly connected to the news. To the business of distributing the same information. Newspapers, which were cumbersome and printed with too much waste; were always expensive. So I set out on finding a way how to make the same news distribution a lot more affordable.
Using my family’s saved money I began a subscription-based health magazine
Which I edited with only my wife and one additional journalist. In a space of a year, we had enough subscribers to keep afloat. We began expanding to different topics and niche markets. As this was going well, I noticed that there were additional options in a completely new news; known as the internet.
In the early 1990’s it was only coming about. Realizing there was a huge potential in it. I invested heavily in a website version of our magazine. Therefore, here I began distributing content mostly about various diets, exercises and over all health. As well as finding a solution for problems people may have with their health; like stress disorders or anxiety attacks for instance. At first, this was not a successful endeavor. But gradually, as months passed by, I realized I have a great following inside of a small group of people.
Knowing that the media industry grows when the same group is expanded
I diverted funds from our printed health magazine to the website; just as the internet was becoming more and more popular. At that point, the process started bringing in money on a much bigger scale. I was producing additional websites. We also began employing more journalist as well as crunching an article after article.
Today, we have a small media empire and my sons are also working in the business; which makes them the fifth generation of our family in the media. I was willing to risk funds to try something new. But this was proven to be a great decision.
Now, we can enjoy a steady business that is covered in many of the most relevant directories of the news industry. But, as the society and its issues change. Our business have to change as well. But, I think that this is a job for the sixth generation of our family.
